G. Coleman Thompson

ADVISORY – SURFACE TRANSPORTATION

G. Coleman Thompson’s career in the transportation industry started in 1979 as a dock worker for Burlington Northern Air Freight at their Charlotte, NC facility. He was quickly promoted to Domestic Inbound Coordinator, handling cargo logistics for the facility.

In 1986 Thompson moved on to Amerford International as their Sales Manager, traveling through North and South Carolina and lower Virginia offering air export services. Four years later he joined the C.H. Powel Company in a similar position. In 1992 he joined Damco Maritime as a Terminal Manager.

It was in 1998 when Thompson found great opportunity to use his then 20 years of freight experience. He and his business partner founded Hunter Transportation Company, which specializes in local and short haul over the road container transport in the Charleston, SC area. As Vice President, he was responsible for all operations and sales. At the companies inception, the drivers and equipment were provided by area owners / operators. Thompson oversaw a business model switch to an asset-based carrier, where the company purchased its own tractors and chassis and employed company driver. This worked well and as the business improved, they incorporated owner / operators back into their business model.

Hunter Transportation was acquired by ATS Logistics of North Charleston, SC in early 2021. That is when Thompson left the company to become a Business Consultant.

Thompson brings 43 years of freight transportation experience to the International Forwarding Academy. In addition to his career, he was a member of the South Carolina Trucking Association Executive Committee, providing guidance for the Executive Director and membership. He also served as President of the Charleston Motor Carriers Association for 2 years and as Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors for Charleston Maritime Association

Thompson has been married for 36 years and has two sons, one of which has followed in his father’s footsteps as a Fleet Manager for ATS Intermodal. When Thompson is not consulting, he enjoys Disc Golf, Bicycling, playing drums in various musical groups and spending time with his dogs.
